Virgil studied jazz organ with Herb Wigley of Minneapolis who produced many professional jazz and classical organists and pianists. Starting out on accordion, Virgil learned to play all styles of music and has played in variety, rock-pop, country and blues bands. He and his wife, Jacki, fronted a house band for 8 years. Since 1988 he has played Hammond B3 with the Butanes blues band---multiple winner of the City Pages "Twin Cities Best Blues Band". The Butanes have backed many national R & B artists all over the country and Europe including 12 years at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival backing the late, great Earl King. A retired dentist, Virgil still enjoys "tickling the ivories".
